JeffCo, Inc. Programs and Services

 JeffCo Sheltered Workshop, Inc. is the adult division of the Jefferson County Board of Developmental Disabilities and consists of the JeffCo Production Center, which is located at 256 John Scott Highway, and the JeffCo Training Center, located at Cherry and Pico Street, both in Steubenville, Ohio. Work opportunities and training are provided to eligible adults with developmental disabilities residing in Jefferson County.

Philosophy of the Program

The underlying philosophy of JeffCo Workshop, Inc. is that every citizen is entitled to a work opportunity. A vocation or a job with pay is an essential component of self-respect in this society. JeffCo provides this opportunity in a sheltered but realistic work enviroment. JeffCo also supports, guides and trains those persons who demonstrate the capabilities and motivations to be employed on a job in the competitive market place. Overall, it is JeffCo's major goal to elevate the level of physical, mental, social, and vocational efficiency of each person, and to help him or her acquire and maintain skills that will assist the individual to live as independently as possible in the least restrictive enviroment.

Criteria for Admittance

JeffCo Sheltered Workshop, Inc. accepts any resident of Jefferson County age 16 years or older who meet Ohio's eligibility criteria. Some restriction may apply to some work settings based on federal law.

The O.E.D.I (Ohio Eligibility Determination Instrument)is used to determine eligibility for services. A person must demonstrate deficits in three of the the following life activity areas to be eligiblity for services: Self Care, Receptiuve and Expressive Language, Mobility, and Self Direction, Capacity for Independent Living, Learning, and Economic self sufficiency.

 Programs and Services

JeffCo Sheltered Workshop, Inc. serves a wide range of individuals with developmental disabilities, and attempts to provide quality services based upon the individual needs of the persons served. Programs are currently in place to meet the needs of most, if not all, persons with developmental disabilities. Following is a brief description of the available programs and services.

 

  1. Personal, Social, and community Support Services is geared toward individuals with profound and servere mental retardation and/or individuals with challenging behaviors. Programming focuses on daily living skills, behavior support, recreational activities, and some vocational training.
     
  2. Organizational Employment Services enable individuals to earn a commensurate wage in the sheltered work enviroment or as a member of one of our community work crews. Programming focuses on maintaining or increasing the person's productivity and earnings. The ultimate goal is for the individual to become as productive as possible in their assigned job duties.
     
  3. Employee DevelopmentServices assist individuals toward their optimal level of vocational development. The intent of the program is to assist persons to understand the meaning, values, and demands of work; to learn or re-establish skills, attitudes, personal characteristics, and work behaviors; and to develop functional capacities.
     
  4. Supported Community Employment Services is a specialized , comprehensive program consisting of, targeted job development, individualized job placement, job coaching, and ongoing follow-along services. It is the intent of JeffCo to fully integrate consumer/employees into their communities by assisting them to find and maintain community jobs.
     
  5. Bus transportation is available for all consumer/employees for day programming. Vans are used to transport consumer/employees to community work sites. All transportation is provided free of charge.

Other Available Services

Service Co-ordination, nursing services, occupational therapy services, mental health services, physician services, family resources, and speech therapy services are also available for individuals with the need.

Referrals

Any individual, parent, guardian, friend, relative, social service agency, school, institution, or other organization, can register developmentally disabled individuals for services by calling the Jefferson County Board of Developmental Disabilities, Service Coordination Department at 740-266-4291.
